S. Giovanni is a residential area located between the Coliseum and the Via Appia, built in the 1940's to surround the imposing Basilica di S. Giovanni in Laterano, second in size to Saint Peter's only and home to the Pope until the Sixteenth Century. The area is very quiet and is characterised by broad and airy tree-lined avenues. It is the ideal area for those who want to be located in the centre of Rome but who want to be well away from the stress of city life
