In medieval times, Villamassargia was the richest village of South- West Sardinia. The memory of this glorious past is kept in the Historical Park of S’Ortu Mannu (there are huge olive threes planted in 1300) and two Romanic Churches in downtown: Santa Maria della Neve and Nostra Signora del Pilar. At the beginning of XX century, Villamassargia was a miners’ town: many of its inhabitants worked in Orbai Mine, where today there is still an old village. From Villamassargia it takes less then 15 minutes by car or motorbike to get to the splendid coastline, characterised by long expanses of fine, golden sand, but also by sheer cliffs dropping down to the blue sea: this is what nature can offer you in South West Sardinia.
