Sirmione is a commune in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy (northern Italy). It is bounded by other communes of Desenzano del Garda and Peschiera del Garda in the province of Verona and the region of Veneto. It has a historical centre which is located on a small peninsula that separates the lower part of Lake Garda. Today, the city of Sirmione remains an isolated haven from the rest of the world. While the drawbridge has been replaced by a pedestrian walkway, cars are not permitted unless you're a guest of one of the local hotels. People still flock to the area for its hot mineral springs and the peace afforded by its distance from the mainland -- just as they did in Roman times.
