Riva, meaning "riverbank" in Italian, lies on the northern bank of Lake Garda, where the incredible blue of the lake gives way to the Dolomite Mountains. Riva possesses a particular landscape and environment which have made it, since prehistoric times, a settling place for various communities. Moreover it has been an international tourist destination for the Middle-European elite since the second half of the 19th century. The numerous visitor trails all include 3rd November Square with its Lombardy-Veneto style buildings which opens onto the port and the mirror of Lake Garda. Nearby are the Apponale Tower, from which the city and the blue of the lake can be admired, and the Rocca, which houses the town museum. The remains of the city wall with its gateways to the Medieval city, the hydroelectricity center Ponale built by the "D'Annunzio architect" Giancarlo Maroni, the Bastion which dominates over Riva from above and the Villino Campi on the lakeside road are also noteworthy.
