Il paese sorge sul sito un tempo occupato dalla Abbazia benedettina di s. Giovanni di collimento, fondata dal conte Odorisio. Il nucleo si è formato dall'aggregarsi di numerose ville che facevano parte del contado dell'Aquila. Divennero poi feudo dei Colonna e nel 1610 di Marcantonio Palma. Passo' poi sotto i Barberini. In passato erano famose le sue cave di marmo.
