Situato nel lembo nord-occidentale della provincia di Asti, al confine con la provincia di Torino, quest'area, caratterizzata da ampie colline e profonde e suggestive vallate, rappresenta una vera e propria balconata di osservazione della catena montuosa alpina. Denominata come "Basso Monferrato", a dispetto delle sue generose altitudini, (553 metri s.l.m. ad Albugnano) essa rappresentava l'estremo baluardo di quello che era il Marchesato del Monferrato.
